The New York Times Adopts Hyperledger Fabric to Fight Misinformation in the Media

In order to assure the provenance of digital files, The New York Times (NYT), has adopted the Hyperledger Fabric permissioned blockchain

Fighting Fake News in the Media

Based on information sources from the firms’ News Provenance Project official website, the newly adopted technology will be used to fight misinformation in the media. The website further continued that the aims and the main objective of the project are to make available a platform which is widely applicable to variously-sized publications.

Reportedly, using DLT, NYT will be able to record metadata about video and audio recordings which are published by any media or news organizations.

Reportedly, this new project is still in its first stage. In this stage, the project is aiming to create a “photojournalism-focused proof-of-concept that demonstrates how such a blockchain-based system could work to scale.”

The site states:

“Our initial work involves exploring a blockchain-based system for recording and sharing metadata about media — images and videos in particular — published by news organizations. We are also conducting user experience research to identify the types of signals that can aid users in recognizing authentic media.”NYT notes, “All hype aside, blockchain offers mechanisms for sharing information between entities in ways we think are essential for establishing and maintaining the provenance of digital files.”

According to the website, all the results of the project will publically available.

Lead, Blockchain Exploration Job

Earlier this year, The New York Times published a blockchain-focused vacancy ad. The title of the role advertised then, was “Lead, Blockchain Exploration”. The post stated that the firm was seeking, “a forward-looking leader who will help envision and design a blockchain-based proof of concept for news publishers.”
The post continued that the new “Lead, Blockchain Exploration” at NYT would be tasked with developing the PoC within the newspaper’s research and development unit and expected to determine a vision, brand and public identity for the project.
