Here’s How You Can Buy a Pie with Crypto

By CCN: Nine years ago today, Laszlo Hanyecz, an early adopter of Bitcoin, offered 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. He was taken up on that offer and recently told Bitcoin Magazine that he spent as much as 100,000 BTC on pizza that same year.

5 Million Pizzas for the Price of Two

A single Bitcoin would buy you a year’s supply of pizza today, depending on where you buy it. For a standard $30 pizza order today, you’ll only shell out around 0.0038 BTC. Effectively, Hanyecz could have purchased over 5 million pizzas if he had waited.

He’s been in the news recently, as always, as the price of Bitcoin rises. Featured in the following 60 Minutes segment last weekend, he said “It’s not good for me to think like that,” when Anderson Cooper asked him how he feels about having lost a fortune on pizza.

To celebrate Bitcoin Pizza day, Huobi essentially gave a massive discount on a significant amount of Bitcoin. About $1.5 million worth of BTC were sold at a discount today. 50% was sold half-off, while the remainder was sold 12% off. This was a huge opportunity for traders that achieved massive success, according to Huobi, who wrote to CCN:

“Our Pizza Day Prime BTC sale also took place over the course of two rounds. In the first, 38 BTC was offered to users on a first-come, first-served basis for 1538.46 HT each – a discount of 50% off market price. In the second, 150 BTC was distributed to 11,456 users via adjusted system matching for 2707.69 HT each – a discount of 12% off market price.”

HT refers to Huobi Token. Huobi did the sale in conjunction with an initial exchange offering of RSR, the Reserve stablecoin’s backer token.

How to Buy Pizza with Crypto

That was one way you might have celebrated, if you already had a qualified Huobi account. But you can also celebrate by buying pizza. Doing so directly isn’t widely supported, but there are numerous other ways to buy pizza online.

For example, you can use eGifter, as this reporter has historically done. You just use the crypto checkout option and buy a Domino’s or Pizza Hut or Papa John’s gift card in the amount you’re looking to spend.

There is also Gyft, which has similar functionality.

Then, there is PizzaForCoins, an age-old website which enables you to buy pizza for Bitcoin.

If you happen to live in Iran, you can get pizza for 50% off in Tehran – if you choose to spend crypto.

Yes, 10,000 BTC will go a long way these days. Laszlo Hanyecz is a legend for having conducted the first real-world transaction using the fledgling currency. Looking back, he’d have been better off not to spend it. But everyone who’s held a significant amount of crypto feels that way these days.
