What about getting a take away latte for your spare bitcoins? The world’s largest cryptocurrency has been accepted as payment at smaller online shops for a while, but more and more service companies are also catching on to the trend.
There are around 30 service companies in the Nordic capitals accepting bitcoin, according to the site Coinmap.org. The early adopting companies range from restaurants and bars to massage and tattoo parlours.
One of the pioneers is Samuel Berhane from Stockholm. He owns two restaurants – one in Tensta and one in Vällingby – and also a food truck and a coffee wagon at Hötorget.
“For me it’s an investment. I think that one bitcoin soon will be worth one million Swedish crowns (USD 125,700)”, he says to Veckans Affärer.
His restaurants became among Sweden’s first to accept bitcoin last year, and for him it’s been a great deal so far.
“Since bitcoin has risen fourfold compared to when I started, one single cup of coffee has given me profits of 120 Swedish Crowns (USD 15).”
Copenhagen seems to be the Nordic city most willing to embrace cryptocurrencies. There are 28 companies in the Danish capital where you can pay with bitcoin, including online retailers, according to Coinmap.
Helsinki has 22 places in total, while Stockholm has 20 and Oslo 12.
